Caring For Your Memorial In Winter

Around the Christmas period, it is very common to see Memorials adorned with wreaths. Whilst there is nothing wrong with placing a wreath on a Memorial, care should be taken when choosing how to attach the wreath. Wire is frequently used which can cause staining and scratches, especially when attached to marble, often resulting in renovation work being necessary in the New Year. More suitable alternatives are plastic cable ties or, in the spirit of avoiding single use plastics, garden twine can be equally effective. Where a wreath is placed on a Memorial, don’t forget to remove it in the New Year – a rule often stated in Cemetery guidelines.

Shorter daylight hours and bad weather might reduce the frequency of Cemetery/Churchyard visits, therefore, it can be worth considering artificial or ceramic flowers as an alternative (please visit our online shop for a range of ceramic flowers). Another alternative is to block off the flower bores with bore fillers – these are available with tops to match the more popular Memorial colours.

When cleaning a Memorial, use plenty of clean water and ensure that there is no dirt/grit under any cloth that is used as this may result in scratching. In the event of birds droppings, thoroughly soak the area with clean water before gently wiping away. When cleaning around any lettering or motifs, extra care should be taken to use a soft sponge (e.g. baby sponge) to avoid any scouring action.
